Listed are the descriptions for each type of pipe,

PVC Pipe – is usually white in color but sometimes can be grey, PVC is used to transport high pressured cold water as hot water will cause the pipe to warp. It comes in sizes ranging from 1/2 inch to 4 inches in diameter.

CPVC Pipe – is also PVC pipe but it has received extra chlorination and comes in a yellow color. CPVC can handle both hot and cold water and is more flexible and thinner than PVC pipe and has the same diameter as copper.

PEX Pipe – or polyethylene pipe has the same diameter as copper also and can be used for both hot and cold water. PEX has a higher heat resistance than other plumbing pipe so it is often used in water based heating systems. PEX comes in a creamy white color, also in red and blue colors.

Poly Pipe – is used to transport high pressurized water to and from the home outside and is usually buried underground, poly pipe is black in color and is extremely ridigid.

Copper - is the most common used in the home but it is quite expensive, it is resistant to corrosion and can stand up to higher temperatures.

Stainless Steel – is not commonly used since it is expensive and harder to find. Stainless steel is mostly used in marine environments since it can stand up to salt water.

Let go through the steps in removing mold…

• Identify the source of the moisture
• Seal the contaminated room with heavy duty plastic, be sure to cover doorways, vents and other openings.
• Use heavy duty duct tape to secure the plastic in place
• Use soap and a sponge to clean visible mold
• Clean entire area with disinfectant to kill the remaining mold spores
• Put mold, sponges, rags and anything else that had contact with the mold in heavy duty garbage bags and take outside through the nearest exit.

Mold spores can spread very easily through dust and are stirred when cleaning takes place, use a exhaust fan near the opening to help remover the spores from the home.

So lets get started, first and probably the most important place to start would be with your heating system.

• Have your furnace inspected by a qualified technician to insure it is in good working order.
• Change the filter regularly, don’t forget to stock up on filters for the cold season since you will be spending more time indoors they tend to get dirty faster.
• Clean out the air vents to allow full circulation, also remove any furniture, curtains or other items away from or on top of the vents.

Now that you have checked your heating system and have that ready to go, lets go through the rest of the house and get that ready.

• Look for worn or cracked weatherstripping and caulking, replace any that would allow cold drafts in to the home.
• Check areas that may be open for mice to enter, make sure you have them sealed up and good tip is to use some steel wool in the area before caulking or sealing the areas since mice will not chew through steel wool.
• Switch your ceiling fan blades to allow for better circulation.
• Replace light weight curtains with heavy weight drapes, this will help insulate the window areas.

Winterizing isn’t all about checking for drafts and keeping your home warm, it’s also about checking some areas of the home for safety,

• Check all batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, also make sure you have one in each room.
• Consider installing solar lights outside your home, during winter months it gets darker sooner and having solar lights will provide light only when needed.
• Trim bushes and shrubbery away from windows and doors.
• Turn off outdoor water supply to keep it from freezing.

Starting these projects now and spreading them out over a few days or weeks will make them easier to handle before winter sets in. So take some time then you can sit back and watch the snow fall.

Some places to check for a gas leak would be your gas stove, see if the pilot light has gone out if that is not the case check to make sure all the burners and the oven are turned to the off position. Next check your gas water heater to make sure the lines have not come loose. If you find a loose connection and feel comfortable enough to fix it yourself follow these instructions:

You will need some leak detector, place this on the threaded connections and wait and see if it bubbles up, check all connections to ensure you found all the leaks.

Once you have located the all the leaks, turn off the gas before fixing.

After the gas has been shut off, you can repair most of these leaks by tightening the connections with a pipe wrench.

If you feel you have the leaks taken care of turn the gas back on and test again to see if there are anymore leaks.

Some other things to keep in mind when dealing with a gas leak is that the gas fumes will hover close to the ground not at the ceiling, so make sure you are opening doors and windows to ventilate and never strike a match or create any sort of spark until the fumes have completely dissipated.

Epdm was developed in the early 1960’s by inventors seeking a roof covering that could withstand great temperature fluctuations.

Some of the benefits of using Epdm rubber are it has a great resistance to weather, heat, ozone, polar conditions, and steam. It has great electrical properties and is compatable with hot and cold water, ketones and hydrolic fluids.

Epdm should not be used with or around the following chemicals, gasolene, kerosene, oils, halognated solids, concentrated acids or hydrocarbons.

• Flammable Solids – flammable solids can ignite quickly or react violently in the presence of water, one type is calcium carbide.
• Oxidizing Agents, Peroxides – these have an explosive nature when used improperly, examples are benzoyl peroxide and ammonium nitrate.
• Toxic & Infectious Substances – any substance that could contaminate the environment such as pesticides and waste from the medical industry.
• Radioactive – substances found in the environment such as radon.
• Corrosive - industry and mining use corrosive substance such as sulfuric acid.

The EPA and DOT define what are considered hazard materials.  Always make sure you have the correct permit when transporting hazardous materials.

When you are working with a surface that will need a permanent bond the types of adhesive you will want are:

• Super Glue – very powerful type of glue that is water resistant and will nond most non porous surfaces including skin, so use caution.
• Epoxy – this consists of two liquids, one is the resin and the other is a hardner, combined they create a permanent bond – epoxy holds it form so it can be cut or sanded after it’s cured.
• Adhesive Tape – roll of tape which is placed between both surfaces to bond together – great for photos and scrapbooking.
• Plastic Adhesive – this is just what it sounds like and adhesive that works best in bonding plastic items together.

Other types of adhesives you may find yourself working with are:

• Glue – this is your plain old everyday type of glue, just like you used in school. Great for crafty projects.
• Hot Adhesives – or melt adhesives, this type is usually applied with a hot glue gun, also good for craft projects.
• Contact Cement – this is highly flammable and is used to glue two  non porous materials.

Whatever your project is there is a perfect adhesive for it, make sure to read all the manufactures instructions and cautions before starting.

Some common uses for solenoid valves are to control elements in fludicis, in central heating systems, automatic sprinkler systems, and are also used in the paintball industry to control a larger valve used to control the propellant.

The task of a solenoid valve is to shut off, release, does and distribute fluids, they offer fast and safe switching, reliability, long service life, low control power and compact design.

A threadlocker is a liquid polymer that you put on the threads of the bolt before you tighten it in place, the polymer will set up with the absence of air, which will seal the threads in place preventing them from becoming loose from further vibrations.

There are three strengths of threadlocker

• Low Strength – for fasteners up to 1/4 inch and is good for bolts you may have to remove
• Medium Strength – for fasteners up to 3/4 inch, it is a bit stronger but is still removable
• High Strength – for fasteners up to 1 inch, this one will make a permanent seal that resists removal

The best way to apply a threadlocker is with a hand pump, by using one of these you will greatly reduce cost. A threadlocker bottle is filled approximately half full, the air in the bottle keeps the the material stable. When you dispense straight from the bottle it can lead to excessive dispensing of the product, by using the hand pump this will allow better control over the product and reduce the risk of using to much for your application.

Loctite has done tests on manual dispensing compared to hand pump dispensing and by using a hand pump you can reduce cost by 40%.  Manual dispensing locked 660 bolts where hand pump dispensing locked 1000 bolts.

If you find you need to remove a bolt after applying threadlocker the best way would be to use a hand tool with a good amount of leverage for the low strength and the high strength can be removed with a combination of heat and power tools.

Threadlockers are available in bottle ranging from 5 to 250 milliliters.

There are five general types of body styles, they are single body, three piece body, split body, top entry, and welded.

The three types of ball valves are:

• Full Port – Allows no restrictions on the flow of liquids through the pipe – ball is oversized.
• Standard – does not have an over sized ball, it is usually one size smaller than the pipe used when fluid needs to be restricted slightly.
• Reduced – Valve has a smaller hole than the pipe to control the flow from one side to the other.

Ball valves can be made of any material and can be used for any application from simple water to chemicals.

First you have to decide some things… is it going to be used indoors or outdoors, does it need to be waterproof, is it going to hide large gaps, and should it be flexible?

There are five common types of caulk -

• Latex – water based, easy to work with, best for indoor applications, and have a life span of 5-10 years.
• Acrylic – Clear, water soluble, high performance, can be painted, and easy application.
• Butyl – Solvent based, affordable, weather resistant.
• Polyurethane – Solvent based, superior bonding, can be painted, bonds to most surfaces, will need to be cut or sanded to be removed.
• Silicone – non-porous, watertight, is more rubbery so may not stick as well, can be painted.

Remember when choosing which caulk to use always read the label for applications and see the manufactures website for more information.

There are two types of emergency generators -

• Standby – is permanently connected to your electrical system, they have large fuel tanks and can run for long periods of time. Standby generators produce large amounts of kilowatts
• Portable – are smaller in size, have smaller fuel tanks, produce less kilowatts and will only run for short periods of time.

When thinking about purchasing a generator, think about your use. If you reside in places where power outages are more common and happen frequently you should consider using a standby, if you live in a place where the power occasionally goes out due to a storm and is only out for short periods of time then a portable would be your best choice.

Electricity and wet hands are never a good combination. Never handle an electrical appliance or touch an electric socket with wet hands. Sweaty hands are even worse since salt water is an even better conductor of electricity.

Electrical sockets should always be kept at a safe distance from the sink or shower. make sure all outlets near a water source is a GFCI type this will help reduce the risk of electrical shock.

Any electrical socket at knee height should be covered if there are small children in the home, a child that pokes a finger in a socket could be fatally injured from an electrical shock.

Electrical wiring should always be inspected as corroded or torn wires can lead to an electrical accident.

Never attempt to do any electrical work while the power is on, always make sure you have fully turned off the power before beginning any project.

If an electrical fire occurs never use water to try and extinguish it, this will actually make it worse, always use a fire extinguisher.

If you are not a qualified electrician never try to do these projects on your own, incorrect wiring can lead to many accidents.

Light bulbs are a source of heat, always keep any flammable materials away from them as it may cause a fire.

Extension cords are a common reason for shocks and fires, if you have over loaded them they may produce to much heat and cause a fire, also inspect them for worn out wires to ensure safety. Also keep in mind you would  never want to cover cords with furniture or rugs, since they do conduct heat.

Keeping this tips in mind should hopefully keep you are your family safe around the home.

First you have a widespread faucet, this is a very flexible type of faucet, it has three different pieces that consist of two handles and one spout and has a standard spread which can be spread starting from six inches to twelve inches. This type of faucet has one handle for cold and one handle for hot water, it is easy to clean and maintain.

Next is the center set faucet, this type has a standard 4-inch drill and two handles, with the handles mounted on a plate. The center set is best for smaller spaces since the handles are closer to each other, these are sometimes a little more difficult to clean since they are a smaller and compact design.

New more modern bathrooms are making use of the wall mounted faucets, this type is installed on the wall above the sink and have longer spouts. Bathrooms that have pre installed sinks are making use of this type of faucet.

Commercial bathrooms are now using electronic sink faucets, this faucet will turn on when the user places their hands under the spout and it turns off automatically, another type uses a touch pad to control the temperature and the flow volume. Electronic faucets are not recommended for residential use as they are not very economical.

The garbage disposal was first introduced on the market in 1938 by InSinkErator, it was developed by a man named John W. Hammes of Wisconsin. In order for a garbage disposal to work the cities had to rework their entire sewage systems, many of the cities refused including New York City which declared the garbage disposal illegal up until 1997 when they finally removed the law.

Time and frequent use can cause food and grease build up in your disposal, this build up can affect the functioning and smell of your disposal, here is a good way to clean it out.  Place some ice cubes over the drain, then put either rock salt or vinegar on the ice cubes, turn on the water and the disposal until all the ice is crushed up, for a better scent add some citrus peels.

First take an inventory of the chemicals you have, write down the names and amounts of each item, and note the location of each item on the shelf. While you are taking inventory be sure to also check the shelf life of each chemical, if you find some that are past the recommended shelf life dispose of it properly (according to manufactures directions). Assess which chemicals are used most and what they are used for, dispose of any unwanted or never used chemicals at this time.

As you are removing and inspecting the items use a wet cloth to wipe the bottles or containers clean of any spilled or leaking chemicals, you will want to also at this time check each of the bottles to make sure you can still read the instructions and contents labels. When you have cleaned each bottle wipe the shelves clean, once that is done you can replace each item in an organized way allowing room to reduce spillage, you will want to place large or heavy containers on the front lower shelves for easy access, place the most used smaller items on the higher shelves and then the less used items behind them.

• Timing Belts – Also known as synchronous belts and are used in low power applications, they have teeth on the inside and does not depend on friction.

Check valves are used in several types of devices,  for instance they can be used in water heaters and sump pumps but can also be used with control valves, strainers, and flow meters.

Some different types of Check valves are:

• Ball – This type is the most common, a ball in the valve sits tightly against the valve where the material comes in. A spring holds the ball in place and helps seal the opening – water flowing through the pipe will push the ball against the spring allowing water to flow through – when the flow is cut off the ball is pushed back by the spring to stop any backflow of material.
• Cone – A cone valve is similar to a ball valve except the plug is shaped like a cone, these can also be called a lift check valve. The cone valve is designed with a cone that is held on a bar which will raise up when water or material flows through the pipe, it will then drop in place when the flow stops, if material was to flow backwards this would push against the cone and create a seal preventing it from going any further.
• Disk – These valves operate in the same way the ball and cone valves work except the plug is a disk shape that is connected with a hinge – the material will force the flap open and when it’s turned off the flap goes back in place stopping any backflow – this type can and may affect the flow because the flap rides on top of the material creating drag. Disk valves are prone to more wear and tear because of the many parts involved in them – these are also known as swing check valves.

• Phantom Flushes – You may have heard it, sounds like your toilet is flusing on it’s own but what this could be is a slow leak from the tank into the bowl. This could be a bad flapperor flapper seat – to fix this you will need to drain the tank and bowl and check the flapper seat it could just need to be cleaned or replaced.
• Water Dripping – Do you hear a hissing sound coming from the tank? This could be water leaking from the supply line. What you will need to do with this case is to check the float, refill tube and the ballcock or inlet valve assembly. The float may be sticking or needs to be adjusted, something else to check would be the refill tube to make sure it’s not inserted to far in the to overflow tube, if neither of these adjustments works you may need to replace the ballcock assembly.
• Slow Emptying Bowl – This is also known as a weak flush and this could be a result of clogged holes under the rim of the bowl. These holes can be cleaned by using a wire to loosen the debris that may be blocking the water flow.
• Clogging – This is the most common problem with toilets, of course the most common tool for clogs would be your standard plunger, if you have a large clog you may have to use what they call a closet auger.
• Leaky Seals – There are five seals in the toilet that could be leaking. You have a seal between the tank and bowl, smaller seals at the mounting bolts and at the base of the ballcock and then one underneath the toilet base. You will need to identify which seal is causing the problem and replace it. Keep in mind that you will have to drain the tank and the bowl to replace any of the seals.

Synchronous belts do not stretch and have less mass and generate less heat than your V-belts also synchronous belts require no run in procedure or retensioning so your downtime is minimized.

By using Gates Synchronous belt drives your facilities can improve the efficiency of your systems by 5% and gain an increase in production and at the same time see a growth in energy savings.

Some things to keep in mind about belts is that they typically last about two years,  if you are replacing belts sooner than that you may need to take a look as to why, if you are experiencing an increase in downtime your drives metal might be worn out, you can use a Gates sheave gauge to measure whether your V-Sheaves are worn.

1. Get out that old drop cloth, this could get a bit messy and you don’t want your driveway the same color as your mower.

2. If you have a wire brush handy take that and knock of any loose rust or paint.

Below you will find instructions on how to use your new Band-Loc tool:

First you will always want to wear your safety glasses, some of the clamps can be metal and you do not want to risk getting something like that stuck in maybe your eye or something.

Next you will want to adjust your tension, you can achieve this by turning the the adjustment knob, you will see the setting in the display window on the side of the handle, the spaces in between the numbers counts as one half setting.

You will want to extend the handle open to release the gripping mechanism, insert the tail of the clamp through the front load entry.

Squeeze the handle repeatedly to tighten the band around the object, be sure to release the handle completely to use the full pull up stroke of the tool, remember the buckle must be secure against the tool head. Once the preset tension has been reached, the handle will no longer release completely.

To cut off the excess clamp tail you will have to squeeze the handle one last time, once the band has been cut you will have to release the handle to separate the tool from the clamp.

When you have finished with the current band you will have to reset the tool before it can be used again, you do this by extending the handle out until it snaps in place.

This tool has a tension setting range of 0-8

First you will want to check your manufactures instructions to make sure you do not use anything that will harm your tub.

Next you will want to fill the tub to about 3 inches above the jets with HOT water, turn off the induction valve (check manufactures instructions on how to do this) then add about 1/4 cup of low foaming disinfectant (Cascade) powder detergent and 1/2 cup of bleach to the water.

Set the jets to the highest pressure and run them for about 10-15 minutes, once that is done drain the tub and refill with COLD water and let the jets run another 10 minutes to rinse.

Drain the tub then wipe it out with a clean soft cloth.

Repeat this process once a month.

Here are some other tips and warnings to keep your tub in top shape.

Do not start the jets unless you have them covered with water, failure to do so can result in motor damage. Do not use bubble bath this could lead to a bathroom full of bubbles, to the kids this could be fun but not a mess anyone wants to clean up, also do not use bath oils as this can leave a residue in the pipes.

Keep in mind these are only suggestions, your instructions should also have information on keeping your tub and pipes clean.

First step:

Remove grease, dirt, oil and any chemicals, these interfere with the adhesion of paint. You can clean the surface with soap and water or a household cleaner.

Second step:

Remove any loose or peeling paint as well as any rust. You want to create a smooth surface before applying your paint or primer.

Third step:

After you have removed the loose paint and cleaned your surface you want to rinse with clean water and let the surface dry completely.

Fourth step:

Apply primer, this step is always recommended to increase the adhesion of your top coat to the surface you are painting. Applying a primer will also increase the durability and a smoother surface when applying your top coat.

The cause of this could be mineral deposits which can accumulate on either on the fixture themselves or clog up your aerator, these mineral deposits can flake off and end up in your drinking water, not a pleasant picture if you think about it. Since you are in the spring cleaning mood why not spend a small amount of time cleaning your faucet aerators, It won’t take long with the few cleaning steps below.

No need to get out the harmful cleaning solutions all you will need for this job is some vinegar and water.

First what you will want to do is unscrew the aerator, remove it and the black sealing gasket above it, rinse the gasket with warm water.

Mix up a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water and place the aerator  in the solution for a few hours. While that is soaking head on out to garage,  did you forget you were organizing that today too?  After it’s soaked for a few hours you will want to flush it with some warm water, if you find there is still some mineral deposits on there scrub the aerator with an old toothbrush, this should release any stuck on deposits.

If you have some mineral deposits or water spots on the fixtures themselves and your mild cleaning solutions are not doing the trick, take a cloth soaked in white vinegar and place it on the deposits for a few hours  then clean the faucet again with the cleanser.

Bradford Whites model/serial number is located on the rating plate which is an adhesive sticker located in the top center or the warning label, in most cases this will be right below the manufacturing facility address.

Below you will find a chart to help you determine the year and month in which your water heater was manufactured.

Spring is coming up on us quickly and now is a good time to do a little maintenance on your septic system. If you live in a rural area you most likely have a septic system instead of a sewer connection, taking care of your system is not difficult if you follow some basic guidelines.

For a family of four with a 1000 gallon tank experts say yours should be pumped after 3-5 years of full time use, some can go longer but this would be the general rule to keep your system running smoothly.  Do not ever attempt to open the septic tank yourself the gases and bacteria are extremely dangerous.

Things to remember inside the house would be to never use the toilet as a garbage disposal,  you should never flush things like cat litter, cigarette butts and filters, paper towels, or facial tissues as these will clog your system a lot faster than you would imagine. Do not over use heavy cleaners as this kills bacteria in the septic system so the solids do not break down as well.

Never pour grease down the drain, this is a good thing to remember even if you do not have a septic system, grease can clog the drains and with your septic system it can clog the drainfield making it impossible for the soil able to absorb liquids, if this happens you may need new pipes and a new drainfield.

If you have a garbage disposal in the home remember to use it wisely, these can double the amount of solids being added to the septic tank, if you can when picking a garbage disposal chose a top of the line that will grind food into tiny particles that would be easier on the system.

Try not to overload the system by checking the faucets and toilets for leaks, waiting until your dishwasher is full before running, using aerators on faucets to help lower water consumption, and reduce water levels when doing small loads of laundry.

Now that you have checked everything inside your home, lets take a look at what you can do outside the home.

When thinking about your landscaping make sure you are planting trees and shrubs at least 100 feet away from your septic system. Divert all excess water away from the drainfield such as rain gutters and any other landscaping you have put in, a soggy drainfield will not absorb and neutralize liquid waste.

Never drive over your drainfield, you should either build a structure over it or cover it with concrete or asphalt and never plant grass on the drainfield to minimize soil erosion.

And finally always properly dispose of any hazardous chemicals such as varnish, paint thinners, motor oils, gasoline and other similar chemicals, these can ruin your system and are very hazardous to ground water.

If you keep these basic things in mind your septic system should run smoothly for years to come.
