image_resize.phpIn 1927 John Hammes invented the food waste disposer in his garage with the thought of making the kitchen clean up easier on his wife. At that time most of the food waste was either burned or buried since the waste water treatment and sewer systems were still in the early stages. The waste disposer was considered an environmental appliance which really was not heard of at that time so they had the task of convincing the town officials that pulverized food would not clog their sewers and then would be good for the environment.

Fast forward to today you will see almost every home has a garbage disposal under the kitchen sink, they have been approved for sale in 80 countries. Disposals role is to divert food waste from going in to collection trucks, landfills and incinerators. When you send food waste through the sewers and waste water treatment plants it can be processed in to bio solids and compost quality soil for agricultural lands and this is more preferred than having the waste along side other garbage in the landfills.

Some interesting facts about food waste:

Food waste sent through a disposer:

Each year 19 million tons of food waste is transported to landfills with in the United States, by installing an environmentally friendly Insinkerator garbage disposal you can help reduce that amount  and the amount of methane gases that is sent in to the air.
