A drive belt is used to transfer motion between two shafts through a series of pulleys, this provides power in engine mounted accessories like car engines, air compressors, pumps and exhaust fans.
The five most common belts are:
- V-Belts - These are also known as vee belts and are used for light duty equipment.
- Poly V-Belts - Also known as serpentine belts and are flat on the outside and have V shaped grooves on the inside
- V-Link Belts - This type of belt is similar to V-belts but are open ended and dont require metal fasteners and are used when obstacles make it hard to reach the belt
- Flat Belts - This is a light weight belt that handles high speeds, but has a tendency to slip since there is less traction.
- Timing Belts - Also known as synchronous belts and are used in low power applications, they have teeth on the inside and does not depend on friction.
