We have all done it, walked into a store, found the caulk isle and stood there scratching your head asking yourself  "OK, which one do I need?".

First you have to decide some things... is it going to be used indoors or outdoors, does it need to be waterproof, is it going to hide large gaps, and should it be flexible?

There are five common types of caulk -

• Latex - water based, easy to work with, best for indoor applications, and have a life span of 5-10 years.
• Acrylic - Clear, water soluble, high performance, can be painted, and easy application.
• Butyl - Solvent based, affordable, weather resistant.
• Polyurethane - Solvent based, superior bonding, can be painted, bonds to most surfaces, will need to be cut or sanded to be removed.
• Silicone - non-porous, watertight, is more rubbery so may not stick as well, can be painted.
