image_resizeReplacing a shut off valve is a fairly easy DIY project, whether it be a liquid or gas valve.

Before starting your project think ahead, if you will need water right away don't start because if you break something or have an incorrect sized part this will prolong the length of time the water will be off and you not even be able to get a drink. If you know the store will be closed in an hour wait to start the project until the next day.

Remove the valve that needs to be replaced with some simple tools, the best way is with a crescent or open ended wrench or channel lock pliers, if its a larger valve you may want or need to use a pipe wrench. Using the correct tools will prevent damages to the fixture or causing injury.

Next purchase an exact replica of the valve you are replacing, make sure the size, threads and the type are the same. The best way to do this is to take the removed valve to the store with you, this will eliminate the guessing and return trips to the store.

You will need to have some joint compound for the threads when replacing the valve, there are several types of compound, make sure you have the correct type for you application.

Once you have you new valve ready to go apply the compound to the threads and install the valve and tighten with a wrench until snug. Turn the valve off and then turn the water back on and check for leaks in the new valve, if you find leaks tighten some more until you find no more leaks.

This project is an easy one day project if you plan out your day and make sure you have everything ready to go.
